About
Made by one person, on purpose.
CodeKiln is a one-person project from the UK. It exists because learning to code has quietly become a subscription business — accounts, streaks held hostage, lesson three behind a paywall — and none of that has anything to do with learning.
So this is the opposite shape: a Windows app you download once, that contains everything, and that never talks to the internet again. No account. No telemetry. No upsell. The kiln metaphor is the whole philosophy — you learn by making things and firing them, not by watching videos about clay.
Why free? Honestly: because it costs almost nothing to give away. There are no servers to pay for — the app runs on your machine and your progress lives in your file. Charging would mean building accounts, licensing, activation… all the machinery the project exists to avoid.
Principles
Plain words. Every lesson is written in ordinary English. Jargon is introduced, not assumed.
Real code, really run. Programs execute on your own machine, under a time limit, with the network out of the picture. The output panel shows what actually happened — it never pretends.
Wrong answers teach. Every miss explains why. Hints escalate; they never just hand over the answer first.
Your data is a file. Progress is a local file you can see, copy and back up. Nothing is sent anywhere.
What it is not
Not a bootcamp. No cohort, no deadlines, no Slack channel. Just you and the work, at your pace.
Not a certificate mill. Nothing here impresses HR. It teaches you to program — that is the entire promise.
Not a funnel. There is no premium tier this is a preview of. The download is the whole product.
Questions, bugs, or an idea that would make it better? Email — it gets read. If you are wondering whether it is safe, private, or right for you, the FAQ answers plainly.
